Macintosh computers have always included a platform-exclusive operating system that never had a consistent name. And in 2020 have started a transition from x86 to ARM, further integrating with its more popular iOS mobile spinoff. They switched to x86 in 2007, justifying it with the explanation that PPC failed to be competitive with Intel's Pentium M series. In the early 90s, Apple partnered with Motorola and IBM to combine IBM's POWER with Motorola's 88k to produce the PowerPC (PPC) architecture they used in Macs from 1994-2007, naming some of them accordingly as Power Macintosh. From its launch in 1984 up until 1996, Apple sold Macintoshes with the Motorola 68k family of CPUs. Throughout its history the Macintosh has spanned four CPU instruction set architectures that represent the four commonly known generations. Apple offered the Macintosh alongside its popular Apple II family of computers for almost ten years before those were discontinued in 1993. The original Macintosh was the first mass-market personal computer that featured a graphical user interface, built-in screen, and mouse, eschewing the command-line interface and/or BASIC interpreter that had been the mainstay for home computers since the late '70s. On OS X Tiger, I also have a lot of console emulators installed. The Macintosh is a family of personal computers designed, manufactured, and sold by Apple Inc.

SoftPC, Virtual PC v3, SoftWindows and a bunch of others.

So far, Mini vMac and Fellow (Amiga emu), No$GB (Gameboy), QB8086 (PC emu), MZemu (MZ-700/800 emu), VGB (Gameboy).Įdit: Ironically I'm often running DOS on Macs (PPC). I'm also doing all my experiments on (a special) DOS mainly. Marathon - Runs fine, mouse also works better This is an old emulator from around 2000, and it also runs in pure DOS. Since DOS is a single task OS, it feels much more like I'm using a "real" Mac OS So far this is my favorite 68K mac emulator simply because I can run it under pure DOS. Marathon - Runs fine, mouse also works better still sucks

I used Dosbox to install the OS and copy the games, then copied the image to my retro machine. Tried running on an retro computer with MS-DOS, it's the easiest one to setup since you don't need any Mac OS installation and ROM. The other games didn't work.Blackthorne hangs up while loading and the other games crash to DOS Prince of Persia 1 - Runs full speed and with sound It runs pretty well in general, but it was kind of a pain to set up.Įxecutor (not exactly an emulator but I had to try it): Marathon - Runs surprisingly well, but mouse twitches a lot (may be the KVM switch I use) Warcraft - Couldn't try since I was too lazy to make CD-ROM work Prince of Persia 2 - Runs full speed, but music is slow Prince of Persia 1 - Runs full speed with music and sound I tried some emulators myself, here are the results:
